BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil -- Carli Lloyd scored the only goal in the second half as the United States women’s national team earned a 1-0 win over France in Group G on Saturday in the Olympic Women’s Football Tournament at the Estadio Mineirao.

The Americans finished the day in first place with a 2W-0D-0L record after New Zealand posted a 1-0 win over Colombia and clinched a quarterfinal place.

Lloyd, who recorded the game-winner the past two gold-medal matches, struck for her second goal of the competition in the 63rd minute. Tobin Heath fired a shot that ricocheted off the left post to Lloyd, who slotted the ball home from three yards for her eighth career Olympic goal.

The 2015 FIFA and CONCACAF women’s world player of the year also became the first American woman to score multiple goals in three separate Olympics.

U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo was superb as she recorded her 102nd international shutout and became the first women’s custodian to make 200 international appearances.

The French took the game to the Americans in the opening 20 minutes, enjoying more possession and delivering the ball into the penalty area on more occasions.

France's most dangerous chance came in the 16th minute, when Wendie Renard beat her marker and headed a Louisa Cadamuro free kick off the hand of Solo for a corner kick.

Solo made a two-handed save on Marie Laure Delie's 18-yard shot at the near left post in the 26th minute and denied Amandine Henry in the 41st minute. She continued her stellar performance in the second half, thwarting headers by Marie Laure Delie and Renard in the 77th minute and 83rd minutes, respectively.

The Americans meet Colombia in their final group match in Sao Paulo on Tuesday, while France faces New Zealand the same day.
