NEW YORK -- Head coach Tab Ramos has so much confidence in Tyler Adams that he demands a lot from his midfielder, perhaps more than most players on the United States under-20 national team.

The 18-year-old is one of 21 players on the former U.S. international’s roster to compete in the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup, which opens in Korea Republic on May 20.

"It’s hard to say exactly what my expectations are because Tyler just keeps getting better and better," said Ramos, who played in the 1983 FIFA U-20 World Cup. "So, I almost want to set the bar so high for him that he can’t reach it. And that’s difficult to do with such a young player because he is one of the younger players here.”

Despite his relative youth, Adams has made his mark with the New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer this season. He has started seven out of 11 games, playing 615 minutes after seeing action in only one match last year.

“Tyler’s physical ability to cover ground and mental strength are really amazing for a young player,” Ramos stated. "I don’t want to put players behind him, but he’s one of a kind and he’s certainly a very aggressive young player and one that we’re hoping will have a tremendous impact on the team.”

The CONCACAF champion U.S. will meet Ecuador on May 22 to open its Group F schedule, before facing Senegal (May 25) and Saudi Arabia (May 28).
