CHICAGO – The United States will face Australia in women’s international friendly on October 20 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, the United States Soccer Federation announced on Monday.

The match will mark the first time U.S. head coach Tom Sermanni has faced his old team. Sermanni guided Australia from 1994-1996 and from 2005-2012, when he lead the Matildas to the quarterfinals of the 2007 and 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments.

“It’s always a special occasion when you come up against a team you were formally involved with, especially if it was significant as was my tenure with Australia,” said Sermanni. “It will be very interesting to be on the other side knowing the ability and the character of the Australian team. I know it will be a difficult game.”

The U.S. is ranked No. 1 in the latest FIFA Women’s World Rankings and is unbeaten in 2013 with a 10-2-0 record, scoring 43 goals and conceding eight.

“I’ve been delighted with how our team has played over the year as a whole,” commented Sermanni.  “The players have embraced how we’ve tried to play and we’ve gone about our performances in a really professional manner, which can be difficult to maintain at times when you go into games with everyone expecting you to win.  We’re certainly looking forward to facing an Australian team that will be a great challenge tactically and physically.”

The Americans are a perfect 9-0-0 playing under a roof and have never lost to Australia in 23 all-time meetings (21-2-0).

Forward Abby Wambach leads the U.S. in scoring this year with nine goals, increasing her career total and world record to 161.
