U-20 draw pits Mexico, El Salvador, Curacao

PUEBLA, Mexico - Eleven-time and defending champion Mexico will open against Curacao and also play El Salvador in the first round of the 2013 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship.

Wednesday's tournament draw, conducted by CONCACAF General Secretary Enrique Sanz at the Casa Puebla provincial government complex, decided the first-round opponents for the February 18-March 3 event.

The United States was placed in Group A with Costa Rica and Haiti; Group B was comprised of Canada, Nicaragua and Cuba; while Jamaica, Panama and Puerto Rico were joined in Group C. Mexico, El Salvador and Curacao were in Group D.

Haiti and the United States will face off to open the tournament on February 18 at Estadio Universitario BUAP before Cuba plays Canada in the nightcap of the doubleheader.

Mexico-Curacao will complete the second night of play after Puerto Rico plays Jamaica.

Two teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals, the winners of which will qualify for the U-20 World Cup in Turkey June 21-July 13.

This will be the third time Mexico has staged the CONCACAF championship and first since 1996, not counting 2007 when it hosted one of two final-round groups in a qualifying tournament format for the U-20 World Cup.
