    U-17 World Cup: Costa Rica eliminated after loss to Iran

    GOA, India – Costa Rica (0W-1D-2L, 1 point) was eliminated from the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup on Friday after suffering a 3-0 loss to Iran (3-0-0, 9) at Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

    The setback saw the Ticos finish last in Group C on the most goals scored tiebreaker behind third-place Guinea (4 to 3) after both sides finished even on points (1), goal difference (-4) and head-to-head (2-2 draw on October 10).  Iran topped the table with maximum points from three games, while Germany (2-0-1, 6) secured the runner-up spot.

    The Iranians scored two goals in the first half, both on penalty kicks -- Mohammad Ghobeishavi (25’) and Taha Sharaiati (29’).

    Mohammad Saradri completed the scoreline with a minute remaining in normal time.

    This was Costa Rica’s 10th participation in a U-17 World Cup, advancing as far as the quarterfinals four times, including two years ago.
