T&T begins Caribbean Cup campaign Wednesday

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts & Nevis -- Eight-time Caribbean champion Trinidad & Tobago kicks-off its 2012 Caribbean Cup campaign Wednesday, when it faces Group 5 foe French Guyana in St. Kitts & Nevis.

Head coach Hutson Charles will welcome back 30-year-old Densill Theobald, who recently returned to TT Pro League side Caledonia AIA after a year-long stint with Dempo SC in India.

The Trinidadians have called up five overseas-based players: Carlyle Mitchell (defender, Vancouver Whitecaps), Keon Daniel (midfielder, Philadelphia Union), Robert Primus (defender, FC Aktobe Kazakhstan), plus midfielder Hughtun Hector and forward Willis Plaza (both of Song Lam Nghe).

"We believe that it's the best group of players at this time to go forward in the tournament and continue to build with and do well into the Finals," said Charles, who was an assistant to Otto Pfister during the Trinidad's short-lived 2014 FIFA World Cup campaign.

Trinidad has not won the Caribbean title since 2001, when it hosted the final round and defeated Haiti 3-1 in the championship match.  In its last appearance in 2010, the Soca Warriors failed to get past the final round's Group Stage, posting one win and two losses in three games.  Hector scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over host Martinique after his side had already suffered two defeats.

In Wednesday's nightcap, host St. Kitts & Nevis will square-off against Anguilla.
