SAN NICOLAS DE LOS GARZA, Mexico -- Hugo Ayala, Luis Quinones and Andy Delort scored to boost Tigres to a 3-0 Group G victory over Herediano and into the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals at the Estadio Universitario on Tuesday night.

The Mexican side (3W-0D-1L, 9 points) needed a win or a draw to advance, while Herediano (1-1-2, 4) had to record a victory to win the group and progress.

Goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman registered the clean sheet, Tigres' only shutout of the group stage. He was not severely tested.

UANL, which sits third in the Liga MX Apertura,  submitted a thorough performance and was initially rewarded when Ayala tallied in the 27th minute. Lucas Zelarayan sent in a long free kick from the right side into the box. The ball deflected off a Tigres player and off the head of Ayala, who slotted it home at the near post for a 1-0 lead.

Quinones doubled the advantage in the 35th minute. Jorge Torres Nilo started the scoring sequence with a throw-in on the left side to Delort, who gave the ball back to his teammate. Torres Nilo ran toward the top of the penalty area before providing the feed for Quinones to drill past goalkeeper Adrian De Lemos.

Ismael Sosa beat his marker on the right wing and sent a low cross for an onrushing Delort to slot inside the far-left post for a three-goal bulge in the 66th minute.

All three Tigres players scored their first-ever SCCL goal.

Tigres -- the 2015/16 runner-up -- became the fourth team to secure a berth in the quarterfinals, joining the Vancouver Whitecaps (Canada), Arabe Unido (Panama) and the New York Red Bulls (United States).

Herediano now will turn its attention towards retaining the Costa Rican title.  The Florenses top the Invierno table with a 10W-5D-2L record.
