Tancredi nets brace, Canada women remain perfect in Olympics

Canada's Melissa Tancredi (pictured) scored two goals in a Women's Olympic Football Tournament win over Germany on August 9, 2016 in Brasilia, Brazil.

BRASILIA, Brazil -- Canada finished group-stage play in the 2016 Women’s Olympic Tournament as the only side with a perfect 3W-0D-0L record thanks to a 2-1 win over Germany on Tuesday at the Estadio Mane Garrincha.

As the Group F table topper, Canada will face France in the quarterfinals on Friday in Sao Paulo. It will be a rematch of their bronze-medal encounter at London 2012, which the CONCACAF power won 1-0 on a late goal by Diana Matheson.

Against the Germans, Melissa Tancredi was the star, netting both goals.

After Melanie Berhringer converted a penalty kick in the 13th minute to give Germany a 1-0, Tancredi equalized 13 minutes later on a left-footed strike at the top of the box.

She struck for the game-winner in the 60th minute with header off a long free kick from Rebecca Quinn.

"I am just proud of this team," said Tancredi. "To be able to put two goals past a tier-one opponent and really state our spot in this tournament is really huge for us."

Canada head coach John Herdman was full of praise for Tancredi, stating: "She spoke before the game. She got them clear on what this game was about (as) it was about making history in a couple of ways: beating Germany for the first time and finishing top of the group with nine points.

All 18 players on the roster made at least one appearance during the stage, ensuring a well-rested squad for the knockout rounds.
