Six teams to compete in inaugural CONCACAF Beach Soccer Qualifying Tournament

Canada, Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Mexico and USA will compete in the inaugural CONCACAF Beach Soccer Qualifying Tournament, which will qualify two teams to the 2006 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The order of each team's opponents in the CONCACAF qualifying tournament, a six-team round-robin event that will run from 5-9 March 2006, was determined by a draw conducted by the CONCACAF Executive Committee today in New York City.

The CONCACAF tournament will take place alongside South America's (CONMEBOL) six-team Beach Soccer Qualification event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 5-12 March 2006.

The top two of each Confederation's (CONCACAF & CONMEBOL) qualifiers will not only progress to the 2006 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, but will also claim a place in the tournament's semifinals to compete for a place in the final which will crown an overall champion for the CONCACAF and CONMEBOL event on the 12 March.

The 16-team FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup next year is the second tournament to be held; the inaugural event took place in May 2005 at the Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro.

The USA competed at the 12-team tournament in 2005 but lost to the two eventual semifinalists, Japan (2:3) and Portugal (3:9) on 9 and 10 May, respectively. France defeated Portugal in the 2005 finals on penalties after a 3:3 draw in regulation and overtime periods.
