PANAMA CITY, Panama – Josh Sargent scored two goals and the United States remained perfect in 2017 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship play with a 3-0 win over Honduras in the Classification Stage on Wednesday at the Estadio Maracana.

The impressive Sargent took his CU17 goal total to a team-best five, striking in the 26th and 82nd minutes, while Ayo Akinola netted in between for his fourth of the competition.

Sargent slotted in his first from five-yards out thanks to a smartly-devised play off Andrew Carleton’s right-sided free kick.  The second came after he ran on to a perfectly chipped pass by George Acosta into the box and right-footed past goalkeeper Carlos Banegas from nine-yards out.

In the 65th minute, Akinola made it 2-0 when he latched on to a ball played over the top by Blaine Ferri.  The Toronto FC product beat two defenders and eluded Banegas, who came out to the top of the box, to finish ultimately with his right foot from two-yards out despite the hustling efforts of defender Cristian Moreira.

The skillful Carleton was a handful for the Honduras back line.  After navigating the penalty area to create space in the 39th minute, his shot was deflected out for a corner kick.  Minutes before Akinola netted, the Atlanta United player had a header cleared off the line.

Honduras’ Carlos Mejia, the CU17’s top scorer with seven goals, was kept quiet by a U.S. defense that has posted shutouts in three of its four outings, which all ended in wins.
