    Saprissa & Suchitepequez progress to Central Zone Qualification quarterfinals

    Deportivo Saprissa of Costa Rica and Guatemala's Deportivo Suchitepequez progressed to the quarterfinals of the Central American Qualification (Torneo Interclubes de UNCAF 2005) for the 2006 CONCACAF Champions' Cup after eliminating CD F.A.S. of El Salvador and Nicaragua's Diriangén FC, respectively, in the first round series on Wednesday.

    Deportivo Saprissa played visiting CD F.A.S. to a scoreless draw in the second-leg of the Torneo Interclubes de UNCAF (Union Centroamericana de Fútbol) First Round Series A at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa in San José. The result gave the 2005 CONCACAF Champions' Cup winners Deportivo Saprissa the Series A 2:0 on aggregate.

    In the other first round second-leg on Wednesday, two goals from Edwin Villatoro gave Deportivo Suchitepequez a 2:0 win over the host Diriangén FC at the Estadio Cacique Diriangén in Ciudad de Diriamba. Deportivo Suchitepequez claims the Series C with a 4:2 aggregate score.

    The Torneo Interclubes de UNCAF First Round Second-legs conclude on Thursday (4 August) when CD Olímpia (HON) travels to Eagles FC (BLZ) at People's Stadium in Belize City with a 3:0 Series D advantage, while Municipal Pérez Zeledón (CRC) greets San Francisco FC (PAN) at the Estadio Municipal Pérez Zeledón in San Isidro with Series E tied at 0:0, then CSD Municipal (GUA) greets Deportivo árabe Unido (PAN) at the Estadio Mateo Flores in Ciudad de Guatemala with Series H tied at 0:0.

    In total 14 Central American clubs are competing in the first round of the Torneo Interclubes de UNCAF 2005 which is a home-and-away series elimination tournament. CD Marathón of Honduras earned a bye from the first round into the quarterfinals after the withdrawal of Parmalat FC of Nicaragua.

    The UNCAF tournament quarterfinals begin with first-leg encounters from 20-22 September, while the second-legs are scheduled for 27-29 September.

    The semifinal first-legs will take place on 18-19 October, with second-legs on 25-26 October. The two finalists, whom qualify directly to the 2006 CONCACAF Champions' Cup, will compete for the Torneo Interclubes de UNCAF 2005 crown with first-leg on 23 November and the return-leg seven days later.

    The two losing semifinalists will play a home-and-away third-place series (22 & 29 November) for the last Central American berth to the 2006 CONCACAF Champions' Cup.

    The CONCACAF Champions' Cup is the longest running international club competition in the region and has crowned the champion club of the Confederation since its inception in 1962.
