Real España wins Honduran Apertura championship

Real España players and staff (left) celebrate after prevailing over Motagua in Honduran Apertura final on December 30, 2017, in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras – Motagua may have earned a 2-1 win in the second leg of the 2017 Honduran Apertura final, but Real España’s lone goal – courtesy of Angel Tejeda in extra time – gave it the title, 3-2 on aggregate, at the Estadio Tiburcio Carias Andino on Sunday.

The Aurinegros, who earned a 2-0 win in the series opener, captured their 12th domestic crown and first since the 2013 Apertura.

Tejeda’s trophy-lifting strike came in the 108th minute, when he twisted a header just inside the right post from eight-yards out, after Jhow Benavidez delivered a superb left-sided free kick.

Rubilio Castillo was outstanding for a Motagua side looking for its third straight championship, netting a pair of second-half goals.

He gave the Ciclon Azul a 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute, jumping over two defenders at the upper-left edge of the six-yard box to head home Kevin Lopez’s right-sided cross.

The 26-year-old made 2-0 in the 73rd minute by hammering a penalty kick into the right side of the net.

With its triumph, Real España will compete in either the 2018 Scotiabank CONCACAF League or the 2019 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League.
