    Real España, Xelaju & Alajuelense progress in Central American Qualification

    Xelaju MC, LD Alajuelense and Real CD España, from Guatemala, Costa Rica and Honduras respectively, all qualified last night for the last eight of the Torneo Interclubes de UNCAF following second leg fixtures in the opening round of the competition.

    Xelaju MC beat Tauro FC of Panama 1:0, leveling the scores on aggregate over the home and away ties. In the resulting penalty shootout Xelaju ran out 4:2 winners to progress to the next round.

    LD Alajuelense, who won the 2004 CONCACAF Champions' Cup™, drew 0:0 with Salvadorian outfit AD Isidro Metapan. LD Alajuelense booked their place in the last eight courtesy of a 3:0 win in the first leg in Costa Rica.

    In the final fixture of the evening, Real CD España lost the second leg against the Revolutionary Conquerors of Belize by a score of 2:1, the same score line by which they had won the first game. Real CD España went on to win the penalty shoot out 4:2.

    In total 16 Central American clubs are competing in the first round of the Torneo Interclubes de UNCAF 2007 which is a home-and-away series elimination tournament.

    The UNCAF tournament quarterfinals will take place in September with the semifinals set for October. The two finalists, which qualify directly to the 2008 CONCACAF Champions' Cup™, will compete for the Torneo Interclubes de UNCAF 2007 crown later this year, while the two losing semifinalists will play a home-and-away third-place series for the last Central American berth to the CONCACAF event.

    The three Central American clubs will be joined by defending champion Pachuca CF (MEX), another Mexican side, two teams from USA along with one from the Caribbean at the 2008 CONCACAF Champions' Cup™.

    In addition to becoming the CONCACAF Champion, the winner will also have the chance to play as the CONCACAF representative against the world's best teams in the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup, while the Champions' Cup runner-up will be one of the three CONCACAF invitees to the 2008 Copa Nissan Sudamericana.

    The CONCACAF Champions Cup™ is the longest running international club competition in the region and has crowned the champion club of the Confederation since its inception in 1962.
