Puerto Rico, Haiti women start brightly at CFU U-17 finals

The Puerto Rico Under-17 women's national team poses for a team photo prior to its Caribbean Football Union Women’s Under-17 Tournament finals match against the U.S. Virgin Islands on September 20, 2013, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Puerto Rico got a hat-trick from Fabiola Miranda to open the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Women’s Under-17 Tournament finals on Friday with a 7-0 Group A win over the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) at the Stade Sylvio Cator.

Miranda scored the game’s first three goals within the opening 41 minutes.  Two of the strikes came from just inside the 18-yard box and the other was an easy tap-in after the USVI defense could not clear the ball.

After the break, Puerto Rico’s constant pressure paid additional dividends, as team captain Marjorie Martinez netted a brace with tallies in the 60th and 69th minutes.

Adriana Tirad made it 6-0 in the 70th minute and second-half substitute Juliana Templeman closed Puerto Rico’s goal account with five minutes left in regulation.

Puerto Rico returns to group play on Sunday against Antigua and Barbuda, while USVI meets host Haiti later that evening.

Haiti U17 women top Antigua in CFU tournament

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Host Haiti got its Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Women’s Under-17 Tournament finals campaign off to an ideal start on Friday with a 6-0 victory over Antigua and Barbuda at the Stade Sylvio Cator.

The result left the Haitians in a first-place tie in Group A with Puerto Rico, which opened the competition with 7-0 over the U.S. Virgin Islands earlier in the day.

Batcheba Louis and Isnada Lebrun each netted hat-tricks in a winning effort.

Looking dangerous from the opening whistle, Louis opened the scoring in the 26th minute after making a solo run into the Antiguan area and firing a shot that hit the uprights before ricocheting into the net.

She doubled Haiti’s advantage five minutes later with a strike from inside the 18-yard box that eluded diving goalkeeper Shawnisha Hector.

Lebrun entered the game at the half and made it 3-0 in the 62nd minute.

Louis scored her third goal in the 66th minute; before assisting for Lebrun in the 69th and 81st minutes.

Next up for Haiti is a meeting with the U.S.Virgin Islands on Sunday, immediately after an encounter between Antigua and Puerto Rico.
