Panama qualifies for Women's U-17 Championship

PENOMOME, Panama - Victories over Nicaragua and El Salvador sent Panama into the CONCACAF Women's Under-17 Championship next year, making it the seventh side in the eight-team field.

Angela Evans scored once in each half Saturday in a 3-1 victory over El Salvador, clinching the berth. Natalia Mills converted a penalty in the 24th minute, equalizing after Tania Sanchez had given El Salvador the lead two minutes earlier.

It was Evans' second goal in as many games. She scored in the 14th minute of Tuesday's 3-2 victory over Nicaragua, a match in which Panama had to endure the final 56 minutes with 10 players after Yerenis de Leon was ejected in the 34th minute.

El Salvador put itself in position to advance with a 7-0 victory over Nicaragua on Thursday, a game highlighted by five goals by Francisca Gonzalez.

Panama completes Group A along with Mexico, Canada and Jamaica. Only one team remains undecided for the March 9-20 championship in Costa Rica.

The Dominican Republic will face the Cayman Islands in a two-leg series on Saturday and December 12 to decide the final berth. The winner will join the United States, host Costa Rica and Haiti in Group B.
