ALAJUELA, Costa Rica – Costa Rican side Alajuelense announced Tuesday the signing of Panama international Roberto Chen on a one-year contract.

The defender joins from Panama’s Arabe Unido, where he spent the 2017 Clausura and 2017 Apertura seasons.

Alajuelense marks the seventh club in Chen’s career, with previous spells at San Francisco (Panama); Malaga and Linense (both Spain); Zulte-Waregem (Belgium) and Rionegro Aguilas (Colombia).

“Roberto is a 23-year-old footballer and is a young player with great potential,” said Alajuelense president Fernando Ocampo. “At a young age, he has played in Malaga and in other European countries. As a young player, he was with the Under-17, Under-20 and Senior national teams. He is a very important reinforcement in defense because of his aerial ability.”

Chen boasts a wealth of international experience both with club and country.

He has played four games in both the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League (1 goal in 2-1 quarterfinal win over FC Dallas on March 1, 2017) and the Scotiabank CONCACAF League.

With 23 caps, Chen appeared in three matches for Panama in the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup and played every minute of the Canaleros’ run to the 2013 final. He also competed two World Cup Qualifying campaigns, appearing in two matches during the successful campaign for Russia 2018.

Ocampo confirmed that in the event Chen is selected to play for Panama in next year’s World Cup, the player would reserve the right to opt out of his one-year contract.
