SANTA MARTA, Colombia – Panama defeated Bolivia, 4-2, for its first win of the XVIII Juegos Bolivarianos on Thursday at the Coliseo Menor Parque Deportivo Bolivariano.

The Panamanians, who opened the competition with three straight losses, got two goals from Fernando Mena (10’, 16’).  Claudio Goodridge (28’) and Alfonso Maquensi (32’) – Panama’s top scorer in the 2017 CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship with six goals -- added one each.

"We needed to win for the good of everybody,” said Mena.  “The adjustments were made and the goals were finished, a detail that took its toll in the other duels.”

Fifth-place Panama (3 points) can still advance to the bronze medal match.  For that to happen, Ecuador (6 points) must first lose Bolivia on Friday and then the Canaleros will have to beat Peru later in order for fourth place to be decided by a tiebreaker.

“We are going to close hard against Peru,” Mena finished.
