Palacios prepping Plaza Amador for Apertura, CONCACAF League

PANAMA CITY, Panama – With its 2017 Panamanian Apertura opener slightly more than two weeks away, head coach Jair Palacios is preparing Plaza Amador for what could be busy domestic and international campaigns.

The Leones launch the new Liga Panameña de Fútbol season by hosting Chorrillo FC on July 15 and will then kick off play in the Scotiabank CONCACAF League with an August 2 visit to Jamaica’s Portmore United.

“The team is good,” said Palacios. “We are all consciously working to be able to reach the objective, which is to be the champions. We have a bitter taste from the past two seasons in which we had good numbers, but we didn’t manage to achieve the title of champions.”

Over the last 12 months, Plaza Amador found Arabe Unido to be a stumbling block, falling to the Expreso Azul in the 2016 Apertura final (0-2) and the 2017 Clausura semifinals (agg: 1-2).

While he’s still looking to add a center back and forward to the roster, Palacios will have his side take part in a pre-season tournament this weekend with Azuero FC, Atletico Veraguense and Tauro FC.

“We want for the team to be a bit separated from the city and we need for everyone to find the rhythm of play,” the former Arabe Unido manager concluded.
