Pachuca hopes rest, preparation time pays dividends

PACHUCA, Mexico – For the first time since March, Pachuca is not playing in either a Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League or Liga MX game during the midweek.

The Tuzos, who contested a whopping nine matches during the month of April, hope that the extra preparation time and rest will serve them well ahead of their 2017 Liga MX Clausura regular-season finale on Saturday at Club America.

“We have not had a chance to train well and this week we are putting everything into it because we have to go to the Azteca with everything at 100 percent in order to win,” Pachuca defender Omar Gonzalez said in a press conference Wednesday.

Pachuca (5W-6D-5L, 21 points) sits tenth in the table, two spots and one point behind eighth-place Tigres. The bottom line is that it has to beat seventh-place Club America if it is to have any chance of qualifying for the quarterfinals.

“That match against America is all or nothing,” finished Gonzalez. “It is the first week that we are able to get in good training because since March we have had two or three matches per week.”

The newly-crowned SCCL champion has won six Mexican league titles, last lifting trophy after the 2016 Clausura.
