Olimpia aiming to add SCL trophy to impressive collection

PANAMA CITY, Panama – If there is a trophy to lift, Olimpia wants to be on the celebration side of the coin.

The Leones have won 30 Honduran league championships and a pair of CONCACAF Champions’ Cup titles.

Even on those occasions when it is not crowned a champion, the Central American power always seems in the reckoning, being the only team to compete in all nine editions of the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League.  Olimpia also was also slated to face Mexico’s Necaxa in the final of the 1997 CONCACAF Cup Winners Cup, before the competition was abandoned.

That’s why it’s placing a priority on Wednesday’s Scotiabank CONCACAF League (SCL) semifinal opener at Plaza Amador.  A positive result would put Olimpia on track for a berth in the final and, perhaps, more silverware.

"I want my team not to walk as favorites.  We respect opinions and we have to make a good match in Panama,” said head coach Carlos Restrepo, who was named the club’s head coach – for the second time – nearly four months ago.  "For this game, we’ll bet on the collective technique, to handle the ball well, to make an extended game.  If we find the ball, we’ll look to play our game."

Through the quarterfinals, Olimpia is 3W-0D-1L in 2017 SCL play, topping Alianza, 3-1, in their quarterfinal, second leg to capture the series 3-2 on aggregate.
