NY Red Bulls look for midfield boost as SCCL nears

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania -- With a month remaining before the 2018 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League begins, the New York Red Bulls are searching for a player to pull the strings from midfield.

The Major League Soccer side traded veteran Sacha Kljestan to Orlando City SC on January 3 and has yet to replace the United States international.

Head coach Jesse Marsch is searching for a solution, but is not sure when one will be found.

"We're still looking to make some big roster moves," said Marsch at last week’s MLS SuperDraft.  “We're hopeful to make at least two, maybe three or four big splashes.  We're working on it.

“Preseason is right around the corner and there's not a lot of time to waste.”

Whether the new acquisitions will be acquainted enough with the team to make a SCCL impact is another matter.  The Red Bulls visit Olimpia for the opening leg on February 22, before hosting the Honduran power on March 1.

Marsch, whose team kicked off preseason training Monday in Oldsmar, Florida, felt the squad needed to be in better physical condition than it was for the 2016/17 SCCL quarterfinals, when it was eliminated by Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

"We were not fit enough," he concluded.  "I told the team when we lost to Vancouver, we didn't lose the series that day…we lost in in December.  I expect our group to come in very fit and ready to go.  We have to have an urgency to preseason.  I know our group learned from last year."
