MONTREAL – The Montreal Impact fortified its roster for the 2014/15 CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) quarterfinals, selecting midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker on Wednesday with the first overall pick of the 2014 Major League Soccer (MLS) Waiver Draft.
Prior to his move to North America, Reo-Coker played over 200 games in the English Premier League with West Ham United, Aston Villa and Bolton Wanderers.
“He fits the profile we were looking for in a midfielder,” said Impact head coach and director of player personnel Frank Klopas. “He has strong leadership qualities and his addition will be positive for the group.”
Reo-Coker, 30, split last season between the Vancouver Whitecaps FC and Chivas USA, playing 21 total games and scoring two goals.
Though Montreal added midfield depth, it suffered a loss in defense when Orlando City SC made Heath Pearce its seventh selection in the 2014 MLS Expansion Draft. In his only season with the Impact, the 30-year-old played in 23 MLS games and appeared twice in the CCL.
