Montego Bay United edges Don Bosco for SCCL spot

(Photo: Allan Crane) COUVA, Trinidad & Tobago – Owayne Gordon scored in the second half to lift Montego Bay United to a 1-0 win over Haiti’s Don Bosco FC in the third place match of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship on Sunday at Ato Boldon Stadium. As a result of the victory, the Jamaican champion also qualified for the 2015/16 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League, its first-ever berth in the annual continental club competition. Second-half substitute Gordon netted the lone goal in the 70th minute, unlocking a defense that had been nearly impenetrable throughout the tournament.  The outstanding Dino Williams won possession on the right in Don Bosco’s end, turned effortlessly and sent a diagonal pass on the ground into the box.  Gordon ran onto the ball, slotting it past goalkeeper Jaafson Origene, who came out his net to cut down the angle. Prior to that strike, Don Bosco had crafted the more solid scoring opportunities. The main cause of Montego Bay’s concern was Dumy Fede, a lightning-fast forward with an uncanny ability to exploit channels and outrun defenders. In the 12th minute, the 21-year-old broke away from the pack for a one-on-one with goalkeeper Jacomeno Barrett, only for the imposing custodian to leave his line for a key save. After Williams’ right-footed rocket from distance was tipped over the crossbar by Origene, Fede was at it again.  This time, in a 26th minute breakaway down the middle, he beat Barrett, but missed wide of the left post. If not for the goal-line intervention of Cordel Simpson in the 59th minute, Fede would have equalized, as his shot from the left side of the box appeared destined for the net. Jean Schwetzer Saint-Hubert tried to get Don Bosco on the scoreboard in the 76th minute with a right-footed effort from 23-yards out.  Barrett leaped high to grab the ball out of the air and thwart the threat. Montego Bay United is the third Jamaican club to earn a SCCL place, following in the footsteps of Harbour View (2008/09) and Waterhouse (2014/15).
