President Montagliani speaks at Football Talks 2017 on CONCACAF’s progress implementing reforms in order to increase governance, transparency, and accountability. The event held in Portugal is organized by the Federação Portuguesa de Futebol.

CONCACAF President and FIFA Vice President Victor Montagliani addressed governance in the game at the Football Talks congress held in Portugal on March 22-24, 2017.

Good governance is an essential pillar of the President’s ONE CONCACAF Vision to successfully develop the sport within the region. Montagliani, a member of FIFA and CONCACAF Reform Committees, has been keen on adopting integrity, transparency and accountability in the world of football.

“Reform is a journey, every day CONCACAF is making progress by implementing measures to increase governance, transparency, and accountability. It is important to ensure that all your stakeholders have the same ethos of the organization,” said Montagliani at the global event organized by the Federação Portuguesa de Futebol in the Estoril Congress Centre. “As leaders, we need to understand that football is a business that has changed and must continue changing as our responsibility is with fans and players. Leadership is about service, through our ONE CONCACAF Vision we are partnering with our 41 Member Associations to grow together and develop the game.”

The President discussed a range of topics including the success of Copa America Centenario USA 2016 as well as discussions regarding a possible collaboration with CONMEBOL on future tournaments. Additionally, he talked about recent changes to the format and schedule for the CONCACAF Champions League, women’s football, MLS growth and the Confederation’s bid for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“It is time for the World Cup to come back to CONCACAF. Co-hosting the tournament is an opportunity, as we have countries with robust platforms to stage the tournament successfully. In addition, Canada, Mexico and the United States are in a strong position to host the competition on their own. However, with FIFA accepting this principle of co-hosting, CONCACAF is in a unique position with Canada, Mexico and the U.S. to provide a World Cup on this platform,” added Montagliani.

The event features presentations of Gianni Infantino (FIFA President), Aleksander Čeferin (President of UEFA), Alejandro Dominguez (President of CONMEBOL), and Gary Stevenson (MLS President and Managing Director).

The third edition of Football Talks consolidated its prominent position as an important stage for reflection about the most structural and pertinent topics in football.
