Mexico tops Nicaragua, extends CU20W shutout streak to six

COUVA, Trinidad & Tobago -- Dayana Cazares scored a goal and set up another to help Mexico (2W-0D-0L, 6 points) to a 2-0 win over Nicaragua (0-0-2, 0) and inch closer to a semifinal berth in the 2018 CONCACAF Under-20 Women’s Championship on Sunday at Ato Boldon Stadium.

The Mexicans, who a sixth straight shutout in the competition, remained provisionally atop the Group B table, with the four-time defending champion United States (1-0-0, 3) set to face Jamaica (0-0-1, 0) later in the evening.

Cazares struck for the first goal in the 16th minute, when the midfielder settled Jimena Lopez’s whipped in cross with her right foot and then fired off the bounce with her left from 14 yards out.

The lead was doubled in the 74th minute on Cruz’s second goal of the tournament off the substitutes’ bench.  Cazares made a great turn along the sideline into space, delivering a cross to the penalty spot, where Cruz slotted home from 10-yards out off following a nice dummy run by Katty Martinez.

If not for goalkeeper Alicia Norori, Nicaragua’s deficit could have been greater.  She made a sensational save five minutes after kickoff, pushing Daniela Espinoza’s powerful header off the crossbar and then grabbing the rebound while on her back.

Norori, with a two-handed stop, then denied Maricarmen Reyes’ powerful left-footed shot from 23 yards out.

Group B concludes Tuesday: United States-Mexico and Nicaragua-Jamaica.
