Mexico joins El Salvador in beach quarters

RAVENNA, Italy - Francisco Cati scored with 3½ minutes remaining and Angel Rodriguez converted in a penalty shootout to lift Mexico past Ukraine on Tuesday and send El Tri into the quarterfinals of the Beach Soccer World Cup.

Cati's goal equalized 1-1 after Anton Butko gave Ukraine the lead midway through the first period.

Ricardo Villalobos failed to convert his penalty attempt before Rodriguez scored, and Mexico keeper Miguel Estrada denied attempts by Igor Borsuk and Andriy Yevdokymov to secure the victory.

Mexico advanced to play Group C winner Russia on Thursday, when fellow CONCACAF participant El Salvador will face Group A winner and host Italy.
