    Mexico advances to 'Round-of-16'; Austria defeats Canada at FIFA U-20 World Cup

    Mexico advanced to the 'Round-of-16' of the FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007 after defeating Portugal by a score of 2:1 in a Group C match on Thursday at the BMO Field in Toronto, Ontario.

    After a scoreless first half, goals by Giovanni Dos Santos and Pablo Barrera in the 48th and 66th minutes, respectively, gave Mexico (2-0-0, 6 Points) a 2:0 advantage. Antunes got Portugal (1-1-0, 3 Points) on the board with a minute remaining, but Mexico held on for the victory.

    The tricolor secured their place, with a group match remaining, in the 'Round-of-16' of a FIFA U-20 World Cup for the first time since Nigeria 1999.

    Elsewhere, a goal by Rubin Okotie two minutes into the second half led Austria (1-0-1, 4 Points) to a 1:0 win over Canada (0-2-0, 0 Points) in Group A play at the Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta on Thursday.

    The 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup continues for the CONCACAF teams on Friday (6 July) as the USA (1-0-1, 4 Points) takes on Brazil (1-1-0, 3 Points) in Group D action at the Frank Clair Stadium in Ottawa, Ontario, while Panama (0-1-1, 1 Point) faces the Czech Republic (0-0-2, 2 Points) in Group E play at the Le Stade Olympique in Montreal, Quebec.
