    Martinique targets Caribbean Cup rebound

Martinique players (pictured) gather together prior to their Scotiabank CFU Men’s Caribbean Cup semifinal against Curaaco on June 22, 2017, in Fort-de-France, Martinique.

FORT-DE-FRANCE – Martinique’s bid for its second-ever Scotiabank CFU Men’s Caribbean Cup title and first since 1993 ended Thursday with a 2-1 semifinal loss to Curacao at the Stade Pierre-Aliker.

The setback – Les Matinino’s first in the 2016/17 competition after opening with six straight wins – left star forward Kevin Parsemain disappointed, but hopeful for better days to come.

"We feel like we really let the fans down,” said the 29-year-old.  “It is unfortunate, but we move on from here.  We have a third place playoff to play and then the Gold Cup.

On Sunday, Martinique will meet French Guiana, which fell to defending champion Jamaica on penalty kicks, for a spot on the podium.

“We wanted to win the Caribbean Cup, but that’s how football is sometimes,” Parsemain finished.  “We will bounce back and, hopefully, we’ll give the fans something to smile about on Sunday."

Since finishing as runner-up to Trinidad & Tobago in the 1994 Caribbean Cup, Martinique has finished no better than third, doing so on two occasions (1996, 2001).
