PANAMA CITY, Panama – Archero Hoever scored late in the second half to give Suriname a 1-1 draw with Cuba to open Group B play in the 2017 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship on Saturday at the Estadio Maracana.

It was Suriname’s first-ever match in the competition, while Cuba – a two-time FIFA U-17 World Cup participant – is making its 10th appearance.

Bruno Rendon gave the Cubans a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute, when he headed in at the near post off Ronaldo Rosette’s left-sided corner kick.

With seven minutes remaining in normal time, the score was leveled as Hoever – a constant threat throughout the afternoon – slipped a shot just inside the left post from the right side of the box, eluding three defenders and goalkeeper Danny Echevarria.

Hoever had an opportunity to put Suriname ahead in the 40th minute, but with only Echevarria to beat, he fired high of the net.

Costa Rica and Canada will complete the doubleheader later in the day.

Suriname returns to action Tuesday against Costa Rica, after Cuba takes on Canada.
