SEATTLE, Washington – Brad Evans' penalty kick seven minutes into second-half stoppage time completed a stunning Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League comeback for the Seattle Sounders (1W-1D-0L, 4 points) in a 2-1 win over Olimpia (0W-0D-1L, 0 points) on Wednesday night at CenturyLink Field. Seattle, which leveled on Eric Friberg’s header in the 90th minute, moved to the top of the Group F standings with 4 points. The Vancouver Whitecaps (0W-1D-0L, 1 point) were idle. Olimpia went in front on six minutes on a goal by 19-year-old Alberth Elis. Oscar Salas recovered an attempted clearance of his own driven free kick and lobbed a ball deep into the box, where Elis latched headed in from eight yards. The Sounders pushed for goals throughout the match and the equalizer finally came when Olimpia defender Johnny Palacios – from within his own box -- backheaded a left-sided Seattle throw-in towards the far post. An unmarked Friberg simply nodded into an open net. Not content for a share of the points, Seattle continued to press for the winner and it came after Arnold Peralta fouled Dylan Remick inside the box. A brief scrum ensued, but Evans netted the dramatic winner, blasting the ball to the left of goalkeeper Noel Valladares. The Olimpia custodian was spectacular in the first half, parrying away a shot by Thomas in the 29th minute. Two minutes later, Aaron Kovar received a cross from Lemar Neagle and put his low shot off the right post. In the 38th minute, Gonzalo Pineda unleashed a dipping volley from distance that landed just over Valladares’ crossbar. Seattle continued to apply pressure after halftime and nearly had the equalizer nine minutes after the break, but a sliding Kovar at the back post was a little late to latch onto Neagle’s cross. The active Kovar nearly brought the teams on level terms in the 77th minute only for his bending free kick from 32-yards out beat the Olimpia wall, but not the post. Just when it appeared Olimpia would beat a Major League Soccer side for a second consecutive year – after knocking off Portland to advance to the quarterfinals a year ago – Friberg and Evans scored to secure all three points for Seattle. The teams will again next Wednesday in Tegucigalpa.
