PANAMA CITY, Panama – Carlos Mejia and Patrick Palacios scored three goals each as Honduras edged closer to a berth in the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup on the strength of a 7-0 win over Cuba in the opening match of the 2017 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship (CU17) classification stage on Monday at the Estadio Maracana.

With the victory, the Hondurans moved into first place in Group D.  It will earn a spot in the World Cup with a draw or win against the United States on Wednesday.

Mejia scored all of his goals before halftime, while Palacios netted twice in the first half and once in the second half.  Osbed Perez also struck for Honduras.

Honduras went ahead 1-0 in the 11th minute, when he finished with his left foot from 10-yards out off a crisply executed give-and-go with Luis Enrique Palma.

The lead was doubled five minutes later as Perez sent a rolling cross from the right side of the box to an unmarked Palacios, who slotted home from five yards.

Perez got on the scoresheet in 24th minute, powering his way down the right and outmuscling defender Pedro Piñeiro in the box, before finding the lower-left corner with his right foot.

The Hondurans added three more goals during an 11-minute stretch to take a 6-0 cushion into the break.

Palacios (31’) knocked in after Cuba goalkeeper Danny Echeverria couldn’t corral Mejia’s low cross from the left-end line.  Mejia (36’, 42’) then completed his hat-trick by lashing in with his left from nine yards and using his right from 11-yards out.

Palacios made it 7-0, coolly concluding a breakaway in the 73rd minute for his third of the encounter.

Cuba, which lost Omar Perez to a red card in the 67th minute, got a consolation goal with three minutes remaining in normal time through Brian Savigne.

Honduras set a new team-record for the most goals it has scored in a single CU17 match.
