Guatemala’s Arevalo humble after four-goal futsal outburst

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – The reality is that most international footballers don’t score four goals in their entire careers.

Most would be happy to enjoy four precious minutes on the pitch and count it in the column of life experiences.

On Tuesday, at the CONCACAF Futsal Championship (CFC), Jonatan Arevalo scored four goals in a single game, powering Guatemala to a 6-4 win over Honduras. That result clinched the Chapines a place in the competition’s semifinals and earned them a ticket to the 2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup.

“We are happy to qualify for Colombia,” said Arevalo after the game. “We accomplished the overriding objective. The goals came. We looked for them and I think it was to the credit of the team.”

Goals are the lifeblood of football. Scoring four of them in one match – all within a 15-minute stretch, no less – is not an easy task.

What did it feel like? What did they mean?

Arevalo was typically modest in his response to the pressing inquiries.

“I think the goals give us confidence and that we can take on everything,” the 23-year-old commented. “I tell you that I am happier for qualifying than for the goals.”

With a CFC semifinal on Thursday against host and defending champion Costa Rica beckoning, Arevalo was focused on the future and what Guatemala can accomplish as a team.

“We now turn the [group stage] page. Now, we’re in,” he finished. “We’re going for the final, and, good, we’re calm. We’re happy for everything, but you have to keep working still. We are going step by step.”

With an in-form Arevalo, however, the Guatemalans may just be progressing “four” steps at a time.
