    Figueroa out of Wigan stretch run

    WIGAN, England - Honduran international Maynor Figueroa will miss the remainder of the English Premier League season and the FA Cup Final his club, Wigan, announced on Thursday.

    The defender left the Latics' league match against Tottenham on Saturday, when he suffered a groin injury while slide tackling Jermain Defoe in the penalty area.

    The setback could not have come at a worse time for Wigan, which sits in the Premier League's bottom three (five points behind Newcastle United from safety, with four games left) and is facing relegation to the Championship. Despite its struggles in the league, it has advanced to the FA Cup final against Manchester City on May 11 in London.

    "He is 'Mr Reliable,' someone who has never missed any sort of time during the time he has been at Wigan," lamented head coach Roberto Martinez. "Unfortunately, he is now going to miss the most important period in the season."

    Figueroa, who joined initially joined Wigan from Honduras' Olimpia on loan in January 2008, has played a part in all but two of Wigan's 43 games this season.

    The 30-year-old has been a fixture with the Honduran national team, appearing in the 2010 World Cup finals and playing in 31 World Cup Qualifying matches.

    His status for a pair June World Cup qualifiers and July's CONCACAF Gold Cup is unclear.
