FRISCO, Texas – FC Dallas defender Maynor Figueroa makes no bones about it, playing in a FIFA Club World Cup would be a dream come true.

That wish for the Honduras international came closer to reality on Wednesday night after FCD topped visiting Pachuca, 2-1, in the first leg of their 2016-17 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League semifinal series

Now, with a win or draw in the return leg on April 4, the MLS side would reach its first-ever SCCL final.

“It would be amazing. I think making a Club World Cup would be the ultimate for this club and for one as a player,” said Figueroa. “But there are still 90 minutes left of this second match and we have to look for it, in a manner of getting the result, in an intelligent manner.”

Dallas’ victory over four-time CONCACAF champion Pachuca was the first by a U.S. club against a Mexican one in the history of SCCL semifinals. For Figueroa and FC Dallas, the result is certainly a point of pride.

“Pachuca is one of the best teams in Mexico and we feel proud and happy for having beaten this great team,” the 33-year-old finished. “I think with the maturity that we have, we are going to go into [the second leg] and have a good set up.”

The only U.S. club to reach a SCCL final was Real Salt Lake in 2010/11, when it fell to Monterrey, 3-2 on aggregate.
