PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – It would be an understatement to say that United States head coach Francis Farberoff knows a thing or two about getting off to a good start in an international beach soccer tournament.

After all, the 42-year-old competed for the Americans in four editions of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup and was a key member of three CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship-winning sides.

That’s why he was pleased his squad opened the three-day Visit Puerto Vallarta Cup 2017 on Friday with a 6-5 win over France.

“It (the tournament) is only three games, so it puts you in a good position to [win] the championship on Sunday,” said Farberoff, who retired from the national team in 2014. “We played against a quality team like France and every time we got ahead in the game they would come back. Our team always responded, but we got to correct some mistakes that we did and gave up a couple of goals that we shouldn’t have. I am happy with the win.”

Nicolas Perera led the way with three goals, but Lucas Roque’s third-period brace ultimately settled matters.

Since the U.S. didn’t qualify for the 2017 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in the Bahamas, Farberoff was eager to get back on the sand.

“These tournaments are amazing because you playing in a stadium. The music is the same environment as a qualifier or a World Cup and you are playing against top teams like Mexico, France and Colombia,” he finished. “It’s a good preparation as there is no chance for mistakes. It’s a short tournament, so any mistake can cost you a game.”

On Saturday, the Americans return to action against Colombia at the Estadio Municipal Agustin Flores Contreras.
