El Salvador’s Lara laments errors in loss vs. Honduras

PANAMA CITY, Panama – A pair of ejections played a role as El Salvador let an early lead slip away in a 2-1 loss to Honduras on Sunday in the 2017 Copa Centroamericana.

Rodolfo Zelaya gave the Cuscatlecos a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute, but the Alianza star was issued a straight red card 12 minutes into the second half. Five minutes later, Honduras pulled level through Rubilio Castillo.

Just when it looked like 10-man El Salvador would hold on for a 1-1 draw, Alexander Larín was then sent off and Castillo bagged the game-winner shortly afterwards.

El Salvador head coach Eduardo Lara expressed disappointment with the result, especially since his team played well at full strength.

“Sadly, a match is lost, which is not what we wanted,” he said after the game. “It shouldn’t have been lost because we started off well, but this is not about justice. Football is not about justice.

“We put forth a good first half where we had four or five clear chances. We were fully dominating. The same was expected in the second half, but things changed with Rodolfo Zelaya’s sending off. Unfortunately, we let many chances escape in the first half.”

Despite that frustration, fourth-place El Salvador (0W-1D-1L, 1 point) can edge closer to a 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup berth with a win over Belize (0-1-1, 1) on Tuesday.

Lara remains confident that the Cuscatlecos can achieve its objectives in Panama.

“The Salvadorans are very good players, they have important qualities,” finished the Colombian. “I know that this national team has to get back in figuring in the scale of things in Central America.”

El Salvador is 6-0-0 against Belize in Copa Centroamericana matches.
