SANTA ANA, El Salvador – FAS announced Monday the acquisition of El Salvador under-20 standout Jose Peña on loan from second-division side Turin FESA.
Peña, considered to be a rising star in Central American football, helped lead El Salvador to its first-ever U-20 World Cup appearance this year.
He scored once in a 3-1 quarterfinal victory over Panama at the 2013 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship, a result that sealed a berth at the FIFA event in Turkey.
There, the 19-year-old netted one goal in three games. His 40th minute tally proved to be the game-winner in a 2-1 triumph over Australia. It was El Salvador’s first-ever win at a FIFA 11-a-side competition.
FAS finished as runner-up in the recently completed 2013 Apertura, falling 1-0 to Isidro Metapan in the final on December 15.
NOTES: Peña scored in a 3-2 loss to the United States in the quarterfinals of the 2011 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship.
