Dhanda goal lifts Canada U-17 women over Mexico

MEXICO CITY -- Canada completed a two-game sweep of Mexico with a 1-0 win in an Under-17 women's friendly on Sunday at the Centro de Alto Rendimiento.A 30th minute goal by Jasmin Dhanda was enough to power the visitors two days after a series opening 2-0 victory.

Mexico had the better of the early going with Jenny Chiu forcing Canadian goalkeeper Taylor Bucklin into two saves within the opening17 minutes.Shortly afterwards, additional attempts from Hallie Hernandez and Taylor Alvarado kept the Maple Leafs on the defensive before Dhanda struck for the game's only goal.

"It was good to have these two games against a great opponent such as Canada," said Leonardo Cuellar, Mexico's technical director, who was very pleased with his team's effort."Like us, Canada is working with a new generation."

In order to assess more both players, both sides made multiple personnel changes in the second half. Those moves altered the pace of play and true scoring chances became more scarce.

Hernandez, however, did have two opportunities to level the score late, but could not beat Bucklin.

"The results were not what we wanted, but in action, the team showed good things, especially in the first half of the second game," added Cuellar."We are forming a competitive team.

    "We are on track."

With the game against Canada, the Mexico concluded its activities for the year and will return to training in January with May's CONCACAF Under-17 Championship in Guatemala squarely in focus.

"Now we just have one small complication for the first part of the year with school matters, but in February, March and April we will not stop," commented a future-looking Cuellar."Also, during this time we will have international tours and can monitor their progress."
