Curacao, Room wary of Jamaican threat in Caribbean final

Eloy Room (#1) and his Curacao teammates line-up prior to their Scotiabank CFU Men’s Caribbean Cup semifinal against Martinique on June 22, 2017, in Fort-de-France, Martinique.

FORT-DE-FRANCE, Martinique – With a meeting against defending champion Jamaica in the final of the 2016/17 Scotiabank CFU Men’s Caribbean Cup slated for Sunday night at the Stade Pierre-Aliker, Curacao is fully cognizant of the challenge.

“Being in the final is a wonderful feeling,” said goalkeeper Eloy Room, who helped Dutch Eredivise side Vitesse capture the 2016/17 Dutch Cup title.  “Curacao has really done the Dutch Caribbean proud.  We are also going to the Gold Cup, so we have a big summer ahead.

“But I must say, Jamaica is a dangerous team.  They have no European players in their team and they are still in the final.  They have speed, unity and physical players.  So, on Sunday, we need to work hard for our victory.”

In seven 2016/17 Caribbean Cup games, Curacao has posted a 6W-0D-1L record, scoring 23 goals and conceding seven.  It has tallied twice in each outing except in a 1-0 tournament-opening loss to Barbados on March 23, 2016.

“We are a team that works hard for each other,” Room finished.  “Defensively, we have been doing well, which is why we can win games.  We have won every game except one, so we are on the right path.  My message to Jamaica is to be careful because we are coming for their Caribbean Cup title.”
