LOS ANGELES -- Marco Ureña found himself on a new club Tuesday as he was selected by the Los Angeles Football Club in the Major League Soccer expansion draft.

The Costa Rica international was left unprotected by the San Jose Earthquakes and LAFC picked him as its third choice.  The team will make its debut in 2018.

"You need to look no further than his performances for the Costa Rica national team, unfortunately, against us, the U.S.," LAFC general manager John Thorrington commented about Ureña, who scored twice against the Americans in a 2-1 away win on September 1, 2017, in the final round of CONCACAF for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.  "We see a player we watched extensively this year.  We're hoping for productive things from him.  As an attacker, we know his work rate, his ethic, his character."

Ureña and Christian Bolaños tied for the team lead with four qualifying goals apiece as the Central American side secured a spot at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.  He was also Ureña a key performer for the Ticos at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, helping them reach the quarterfinals while playing in four of five matches.

The 27-year-old began his career with Costa Rica’s Alajuelense in 2008, helping the Manudos to 2010 Invierno and 2011 Verano titles, before moving to Kuban Krasnodar in Russia three years later.  He made 36 appearances for the club and then joined Denmark’s FC Midtjylland on loan in August 2014, agreeing to a permanent move four months later. With FC Midtjylland, he tallied six goals in 38 appearances, helping it win the Superliga crown. Ureña later moved to Brondby in July 2016.

Last year with San Jose, Ureña scored five goals and assisted on three others in 25 MLS regular-season games.

With LAFC, he could team with Mexico international forward Carlos Vela.
