    Costa Rica, El Salvador open Central Zone U-20s with victories

    El Salvador and the host Costa Rica opened the CONCACAF Under-20 Central American Zone Qualification on Saturday with victories over Guatemala and Nicaragua, respectively, at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa in San José.

    Goals by José Garro and Bryan Ruiz led Costa Rica (1-0-0, 3 Points) to a 2:0 victory over Nicaragua (0-1-0, 0 Points) in the first encounter of the UNCAF (Union Centroamericana de Fútbol) tournament.

    In the second game on Saturday, two goals Dennis Alas and one each from Cristopher Dulce, Henry Hernández and Diego Henríguez paced El Salvador (1-0-0, 3 Points) to a 5:2 win over Guatemala (0-1-0, 0 Points).

    The UNCAF tournament continues on Monday (18 October) at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa when Panama (0-0-0, 0 Points) takes on Guatemala at 10:00 and then Costa Rica greets El Salvador at 12:15.

    The top two teams from the UNCAF event will progress into Group A of the 2005 CONCACAF U-20 Final Round Qualification alongside the Caribbean Zone Series 1 Winner (Cuba or Trinidad & Tobago) and the host, USA, for games taking place from 12-16 January in Carson, California.

    The CONCACAF U-20 Final Round Group B runs from 26-30 January 2005 in Tegucigalpa, Honduras and will have Canada, Mexico, Caribbean Zone Series 2 Winner (Jamaica or Haiti) and the host.

    The top two teams from each of the CONCACAF U-20 Final Round Groups will qualify to the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship in the Netherlands from 10 June - 2 July.
