Costa Rica, Canada draw in U17 friendly

ALAJUELA, Costa Rica - Randall Leal scored on a penalty kick in the 54th minute to give host Costa Rica a 1-1 draw with Canada in an under-17 friendly played Tuesday at Project Goal.

The visitors took a 1-0 lead in the first half through Andrew Gordon, who headed in a free kick by Mikaël Cantave after getting in behind the Tico defense.

"Overall it was a positive performance in hot, difficult conditions against a strong Costa Rican team," said Canadian head coach Sean Fleming. "We played well at times - but went through spells where we gave the ball away too easily.

"We need to continue to learn how to read and manage situations better. This match will serve as an excellent stepping stone for our continued growth."

Costa Rican head coach Edson Soto was pleased with the performance, but was cognizant of the fact that the match was part of the preparation process leading up to April's CONCACAF Under-17 Championship in Panama.

"I leave very satisfied with the work done, the team showed great improvement, knew and could handle the whole game," commented Soto. "We had three or four clear chances to win the game.

"At this time the score is not as important as is the preparation you can have with these games for qualifying."

Costa Rica and Canada will meet again on Thursday.
