CFU Club Championship: Group 3 Recap (Day 3)

(Photo: Paul Reid) MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica -- Holder Central FC (2W-0D-0L, 6 points) advanced to the 2016 Caribbean Football Union Club Championship semifinals by finishing as the Group 3 winner thanks to a 1-0 victory host Montego Bay United (1-0-1, 3) on Sunday the Montego Bay Sports Complex. In a physical encounter between 2015/16 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League participants, Darren Mitchell struck for the game-winner in 87th minute, just three minutes after MBU defender Winston Wilkinson was sent off for accumulating a pair cautions. Referee Marcos Brea issued 10 cards on the night, seven coming in the last 15 minutes of the first half. Both sides suffered key first-half injuries as Montego Bay lost forward Owayne Gordon in the 22nd minute, while Central’s Trinidad & Tobago international Jan Michael Williams was replaced 12 minutes later. Gordon, the host’s main attacking threat scored three goals in a 4-0 win over Scholars International on Wednesday. Central joins T&T rival DirecTV W Connection (Group 1 winner), Haiti’s Don Bosco FC (Group 2 winner) and Arnett Gardens of Jamaica (Group 4 winner) in next month’s semifinals at a location to be announced. The two finalists and the winner of the match for third place will advance to the 2016/17 SCCL.
