SAN JOSE, Costa Rica –  Panama clinched a place in the 2016 CONCACAF Futsal Championship final, outlasting Cuba 6-5 after extra time on Thursday at the BN Arena.

It was the Canaleros’ first-ever semifinal win in three attempts, while Cuba fell at this stage for the first time after four straight wins.

Fernando Mena netted the game-winner in the second minute of the first extra-time period to break a 5-5 tie.  Angel Sanchez and Carlos Perez struck for two goals each in the victory.

Panama jumped out to a 3-0 lead, starting with Michael De Leon’s sixth-minute strike from distance, and looked to be coasting comfortably.

Denis Marquez, however, pulled one back for Cuba in the 15th minute by rounding goalkeeper Daniel Atencio to slot home with his left foot,

Four minutes later, Perez restored the three-goal cushion with his first goal.

Cuba emerged from the break in an attacking mood.  Before 13 minutes had passed, it went ahead 5-4.  Marquez remained calm to level, capitalizing on a defensive breakdown, and, then, Reynier Fiallo followed in the 33rd minute.

To its credit, Panama dug deep into a reservoir of stamina to notch the game’s last two goals.

With six minutes left in the second half, Perez knotted the score at 5-5 off Edgar Rivas’ superb pass from the middle.

The Panamanians will meet the winner of Costa Rica-Guatemala in Saturday’s decider.
