    Caribbean Club Championship: Group D Recap (Day 1)

    BAYAMON, Puerto Rico – The 2017 Caribbean Club Championship resumed Tuesday with a first round, Group D doubleheader at the Estadio Juan Ramon Loubriel.

    Here are the highlights:

    Scholars International (Cayman Islands) 0. Portmore United (Jamaica) 2
    - First-half goals by Ricardo Morris (8’) and Jermie Lynch (21’) gave Portmore United a 2-0 win over Scholars International to open Group D play.
    - Goalkeeper Shaven Sean Paul recorded the shutout.

    Puerto Rico FC (Puerto Rico) 1, SV Transvaal (Suriname) 0
    - Hector Ramos (28’ pen) converted a penalty kick in the first half for the game’s only goal as host and tournament debutant Puerto Rico FC topped SV Transvaal, 1-0.
    - Walter Ramirez drew the penalty after being tripped by SV Transvaal goalkeeper Cherwin Doorson.in the box.
    - Puerto Rico FC goalkeeper Trevor Spangenberg kept the clean sheet.
    - Ramos, a Puerto Rico international, has scored four career goals in the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League (2 with the Puerto Rico Islanders, 2 with Isidro Metapan).

    Five of the six teams have already earned their places in the finals: two-time defending champion and host Central FC (Trinidad & Tobago), Racing FC (Haiti, Group A), Cibao FC (Dominican Republic, Group B), Grenades FC (Antigua & Barbuda, Group C) and San Juan Jabloteh (Trinidad & Tobago, Group E).

    The champion of the Caribbean Club Championship qualifies for the newly re-formatted CONCACAF Champions League, while the second-, third- and fourth-placed clubs will participate in the Confederation’s newly launched club championship for Caribbean and Central American teams, which kicks off in August.

    Last year, Central FC defended its Caribbean title by prevailing over fellow Trinidadian side DirecTV W Connection in the final for the second straight year, 3-0.
