SAO PAULO, Brazil – Canada maintained its perfect record at the 2016 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament, improving to 2W-0D-0L with a 3-1 win over Zimbabwe (0-0-2, 0) in Group F on Saturday.

The CONCACAF power’s place in the quarterfinals was confirmed later as Germany (1-1-0, 4) and Australia (0-1-1, 1) played to a 2-2 draw.

At the Arena Corinthians, Janine Beckie scored the first of her two goals in the seventh minute to give Canada a 1-0 lead. Goalkeeper Chido Dzingirai made the save on Beckie’s initial effort, but the 21-year-old forward was there to put away the rebound.

In the 15th minute, Diana Matheson hit the post, but shortly afterwards she was fouled by Dzingirai to earn a penalty kick. Team captain Christine Sinclair made no mistake from the spot, netting her second goal in as many games in the 19th minute.

Twenty minutes Beckie made it 3-0, striking with her right foot from 10-yards out off Josee Belanger’s cross from the right side of the box.

With four minutes remaining in normal time, Mavis Chirandu pulled a goal back for Zimbabwe.

"Job done for Canada with the result," said Canada head coach John Herdman. "It was crucial to come out of the first two games with six points. It really puts us in the driver's seat for the third game when it comes to our resting strategies."

Canada's last group match is on Tuesday against Germany in Brasilia.
