SAO PAULO, Brazil -- Canada improved to 4-0-0 in the 2016 Women’s Olympic Tournament with a 1-0 win over France in the quarterfinals on Friday at the Arena Corinthians.

Sophie Schmidt struck for the game’s lone goal as the CONCACAF power set-up a semifinal meeting with Germany on Tuesday. The sides met in the group stage on August 9, with the Canadians earning a 2-1 victory thanks to Melissa Tancredi’s brace.

"We are so excited right now, this is such a great feeling," said goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe, who posted her second clean sheet of the competition. "Definitely, we are here to go all the way. After tonight, we are already on to the next task because we know what Germany can bring. There's a lot on the line: we're playing for a gold medal."

In the 56th minute, Janine Beckie received a long pass from defender Shelina Zadorsky and beat marker Sakina Karchaoui with a pair of superb touches, before delivering a cross to the left post for Schmidt to left foot into the back of the net from four-yards out.

"We showed that Canadian grit again," Canada head coach John Herdman expressed. "That's what takes teams through tournaments. Our whole team defensively was very disciplined and then we had our moment of quality as Sophie Schmidt's goal was outstanding.

"It was just another real team performance. I am just proud of what we are showing as we are off to the medal rounds, but we are not done yet."

Canada also defeated the French for the bronze medal, 1-0, at London 2012.
