Canada women repeat as bronze medalist at Olympic Games

Canada players (pictured) pose with their bronze medals after defeating host Brazil in the Women's Olympic Football Tournament bronze-medal match on August 19, 2016 in Sao Paulo.

SAO PAULO, Brazil -- Canada won the bronze-medal match in a second straight Women's Olympic Football Tournament, beating host Brazil, 2-1, on Friday, before a crowd of 39,718 at the Arena Corinthians.

The Canadians defeated three confederation champions – Australia (Asia), Germany (Europe) and Brazil (South America) -- on the way to victories in five of their six matches.

Deanne Rose gave the CONCACAF power a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute. After making a brilliant individual run into the left side of the box, Ashley Lawrence skidded a cross along the edge of the six-yard box. The 17-year-old Rose right-footed it into the back of the net despite lunging goalkeeper Barbara managing to get her left foot on the ball.

Seven minutes into the second half, Canada doubled its advantage. From the right side of the box, Rose delivered a pass to veteran Christine Sinclair, who took a clever controlling touch to elude a pair of defenders and then used her right foot to beat goalkeeper Barbara from six-yards out for her 11th career Olympic goal.

Brazil halved the deficit in the 79th minute, when Beatriz bounced a left-footed effort from eight-yards out into the right side of the goal.

"I am just super proud, not just our team, but every member of our staff," said Sinclair. "It has been four years of hard work, four years of dedication. We set a goal to achieve back-to-back podiums and we weren't going to settle for anything less than that. I am just super proud of this team."

    NOTES:

    • Sinclair became the first Canadian to make 250 international appearances and the goal was the 165th of her international career
    • Rose, at 17-years-old, became the youngest goalscorer in the history of the Women's Olympic Football Tournament
    • The win was Canada’s 15th of 2016, a team record in a single year
    • Canada defeated France, 1-0, to capture the bronze medal at London 2012.
