    CANADA

    • Canada is being led by interim head coach Colin Miller, who is the coach of FC Edmonton in the NASL (second-tier). Miller previously acted as interim head coach during a period in 2003-04 and earlier this year.
    • Ahead of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the Canadian Soccer Association announced Benito Floro as the new national team head coach. Floro will begin his duties following the Gold Cup, on August 1. Floro is best known for coaching CF Real Madrid in Spain from 1992-94, and served as the club’s director of football in 2006. Floro also coached CF Monterrey in Mexico, 1999-2001.
    • Will Johnson (Portland Timbers/USA) has been named the team captain.
    • “This is a great opportunity for everyone – and particularly the young players. We are looking to build something for the future of our national team,” Miller said ahead of the Gold Cup. “I’m happy with the commitment and attitude the players have shown in training. They look hungry to play, which is exciting.”
    • Goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld and midfielder Julian de Guzman are the only players in the Canadian Gold Cup squad who played against Martinique when the countries met 11 years ago.

    Pre-tournament preparation

    • Canada’s last international match came on May 28, a 1-0 loss to Costa Rica at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton. Jairo Arrieta scored the only goal from a penalty kick.

    • Canada played to a 1-1 draw with Ventura County Fusion of the USL PDL (fourth-tier) on July 3 in Portland, Ore. Defender Nik Ledgerwood scored the lone goal for Canada.

    CONCACAF Gold Cup

    • Canada qualified automatically as a member of the North American Zone.
    • Canada is participating in the CONCACAF Gold Cup for an 11th time, tied with Honduras and Costa Rica for third-most. Only Mexico and the USA have participated in all previous 11 editions of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
    • Canada won the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2000, defeating Colombia 2-0 in the final.

     

     

    MARTINIQUE

     

    • Martinique qualified for the CONCACAF Gold Cup for the first time in a decade after finishing fourth in the CFU Caribbean Cup.
    • No players who were part of Martinique’s back-to-back Gold Cup appearances in 2002 and 2003 are part of the club for this year’s event.
    • "A victory in this tournament, it is almost a guarantee of qualification for the quarterfinals. The first two of each group will qualify as the two best third, virtually assuring passage in case of victory,” said Martinique technical director Patrick Cavelan. “We’re not going to throw everything into it from the start and risk losing this first match; it can also put chances of qualification in risk.”

    Pre-tournament preparation

    • Martinique completed their Gold Cup preparations with a 7-0 victory against an amateur selection from the state of Oregon. Steeve Gustan scored two goals, with single goals from Frédéric Piquionne, Yoann Arquin, Mathias Coureur, Kevin Tresfield and Stéphane Abaul.
    • Martinique played their first preparation match against Portland Timbers U-23 in Portland, Ore., winning 2-1. Steeve Gustan and Stéphane Abaul scored for Martinique.

    Coupe d’Outre Mer

    • Martinique participated in the Coupe d’Outre Mer last September, where it finished second. Martinique finished atop their group with two victories and one defeat: New Caledonia (2-0); Tahiti (2-3); Mayotte (3-0)
    • In the final, Réunion and Martinique drew 2-2 over 120 minutes, Réunion winning the title 10-9 on penalty kicks.

    • Kevin Parsemain led Martinique with three goals in the tournament, while Steeve Gustan and Kevin Tresfield scored two each. Also scoring were Stéphane Abaul and Nicolas Zaïre.

    Gold Cup Qualifying

    • Martinique qualified for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup after finishing fourth in the CFU Caribbean Cup.
    • Martinique finished atop Group 3 in Caribbean Cup qualifying, advancing along with Suriname to the second round.
    • Martinique won its second-round group, advancing along with Cuba to the semifinal round and qualifying for the Gold Cup.
    • Martinique lost to Trinidad and Tobago 5-4 on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw in the semifinals, then lost   1-0 to Haiti in the third-place match.

    CONCACAF Gold Cup

    • Martinique is appearing in the CONCACAF Gold Cup for a fourth time, also in 1993, 2002, 2003.
    • In 1993, Martinique lost two of three games, but gained a 2-2 draw against Canada.
    • Its only win in eight all-time outings in the competition came against Trinidad & Tobago, 1-0, in 2002. Patrick Percin scored the game-winning goal at the Orange Bowl in Miami.
    • In 2003, its last entry in the competition, Martinique lost both Group C matches, 2-0 to the USA and 1-0 to El Salvador.
