Canada holds off Iran for 1-1 draw at U-17 WC

DUBAI, UAE – Jordan Hamilton netted a second-half equalizer to give Canada a 1-1 draw with Iran in a FIFA U-17 World Cup encounter on Tuesday at Rashid Stadium.

It was the CONCACAF side’s second straight draw, making it the joint leader in Group E with Iran, pending the result of Argentina-Austria later in the day.

After some tidy ball movement in the approach to the Canadian net, Amirhossein Karimi put Iran ahead 1-0 with a right-footed blast from 25-yards out in the ninth minute that sizzled just inside the right post.

In the 20th minute, Hamilton was played beautifully into the left side of the Iranian box by Hanson Boakai.  The Toronto FC youth product tried to poke the ball quickly past goalkeeper Mahdi Amini only to hit the side netting instead.

Later in the half, a long free kick by Boakai was chested back by Hamilton to Kianz Gonzalez Froese, whose attempt was thwarted by Amini.

Three minutes after the break, Canada was on even terms.  Unmarked defender Elias Roubos flicked a corner kick forward with his head that Amini misjudged and Hamilton was there to fire home off the left post from seven yards.  It was the forward’s second goal of the tournament.

The Canadians could have taken the lead midway through the half, but Boakai went high over the crossbar off a pass from Hamilton.

With time elapsing, Iran missed on multiple chances to grab a late winner.

Amir Mazloum muscled his way toward goal, only to hit the left post with a right-footed shot.  The ball bounced to Ali Hazami, who blazed an effort above the crossbar.

Canada’s outstanding goalkeeper Marco Carducci went on to make numerous exceptional saves to preserve the draw.

The North Americans will aim for their first-ever U-17 World Cup win after 17 outings in an encounter against Argentina on Friday, the last group match for each.
